I think thi article makes some important points about the validity of many statistics. Being that some statistics cannot be trusted I don't think they should be incorporated into discussions unless the numbers have been significantly researched. That said I think its the responsibility of the author of the article or paper first and foremost to make sure that the statistical information they provide is as accurate as possible. Second it is the responsibility of the reader to not take this information out of context.

Statistics are great at altering the way people think. They can be used to alter the truth and take facts out of reality.
