Sounding Board for Extra Credit

Dear Criminal and Deviant Behavior Students, I am setting up this blog post to gather any comments about relevant articles or experiences which I will consider for the possible awarding of extra credit points. Whenever you feel the urge to make some comment about anything we've covered in class or you may encounter in the reading, feel free to use this post for that purpose. Please be sure to indicate in what way your comment(s) may be relevant to the course. I will consider (but not guarantee) extra credit points, and I will let you know what points, if any, I will give you for your contributions. Prof. Ginocchio

The link above it to an article that I read this morning. One of the major mob boses in Italy has been arrested. During the subsequent search of his home the police found a type written list titled "The Godfather's Ten Commandments". I found this particulary interesting because the Scilian Mafia has long been known for their violence. Criminal organization typically takes on either a loner, colleague or peer format (pg. 319 in Crime Types). The Mafia obviously takes on a strong peer format. Many mafia groups either are family or view themselves as such. Their forceful leadership has created very strong social bonds which ensures loyalty. This dedication can be furthered and maintained by defining, clearly, the rules of operation, which is what Lo Piccolo appears to be doing with his "commandments".

McKenzie, I just read your comment on the mafia article. Although I have not had a chance to read the article you cite, what you say about it is interesting and worthy of 2 points extra credit. Your reference to Crime Types is appropriate and suggests that a criminal organization such as the Mafia resembles other kinds of organizational crime.
